James’ favorite One Tree Hill episode

Some You Give Away (season 4)
James: “There was so much payoff for the ravens basketball team, for Whitey and for Nathan as everybody’s storyline converged on this one event. It was a blast to shoot, a blast to watch and I’ll always remember it.”

One Tree Hill season 9 scoop: Nathan is ‘powerless to control his fate’

The final season of One Tree Hill is going to be an intense one for all of our favorite characters, but it sounds like Nathan (James Lafferty) is going to have a particularly rough go of things. And since we’ve all heard the rumors about his mysterious disappearance from Tree Hill, HollywoodLife.com couldn’t help but ask him for more details.

“Nathan gets into a situation where he’s powerless to control his fate, which is not something he’s used to dealing with,” James tells us. “It’s probably his biggest test yet.”

But before he makes his temporary exit from Tree Hill, Nathan will have dear old daddy Dan (Paul Johansson) to deal with, which is another storyline James promises gets… tricky.

“Things escalate between Dan and Nathan, but in a way the audience might not anticipate,” adding that there will be closure for their father-son relationship, “but I can’t say whether it will be one of love or hate.”

Oh snap.

I know part of Nathan’s drama includes him disappearing for a while. Will that be connected to anything we’ve seen already in the series?
“I can say it’s pretty new stuff. Nathan gets immersed in a world he’s not that familiar with and gets himself into a bad situation. There aren’t any skeletons coming out of the closet to haunt him. It’s a new curveball for him to deal with.”

Even though you’re M.I.A. for part of the season, will we still get quality Nathan/Haley scenes?
“I shot eight episodes of the 13 episodes, but they’re scattered throughout the 13. So yes, his presence will be felt pretty constantly.”

What’s it like, for the first time, being done with an entire season before it airs?
“It’s going to be interesting to be able to sit back and watch the work that’s been done. We’re all going to enjoy it.”

If you could steal one thing from the set, what would it be?
“From a materialistic standpoint, I’d want to take Nathan’s Range Rover. That thing’s bad ass. But for sentimental purposes, the best things I got to keep were a couple of the Ravens jerseys. I have them mounted. Those are going to be the things I look back on most fondly.”

Wait, you mounted them? You won’t put one on and play basketball in your driveway?
“Maybe alone, when I want to relive the glory days.”

Speaking of the glory days, do you have a favorite storyline from the past nine seasons?
“I think the most fun I’ve ever had in my life was the SlamBall arc on the show. It was something different and out of left field, but we had so much fun. It was the most exhilarating thing I’ve ever done. It was a huge challenge to gain the skill set, but I feel like I got pretty good at it. I’ve never had more fun doing anything than playing on the slamball court. I’ll have those memories forever.

James Lafferty loves Harry Potter, and other facts you never knew about the OTH hottie

When One Tree Hill star James Lafferty stopped by our office back in September, we were all a bit giddy. I mean, is there anyone who hasn’t crushed on the hot TV star at some point during the show’s soon-to-be eight-season run? But one of our editors was just a tad bit giddier than the rest of us…

OK, so that might be the understatement of the year–Julie, our amazing-beyond-words photo projects director actually prepped for her grand entrance with James–fluffing the hair, glossing the lips–you know the deal. See, Julie’s always had a thing for James (just like I’ve always had a thing for Bryan Greenberg), so we sent them off for an exclusive interview, and he opened up to her about what’s to come after this year’s bittersweet series finale, hipsters, and sneaking peaks at Victoria’s Secret catalogs. (Say what?) Well, just read the interview for yourself:

Julie: So this is it–the final season of One Tree Hill. How does it feel?
James: We shot our pilot in 2003 and we’ll be airing into 2012, so it’s been nine years! Now that the show’s done, I’m happy to take a bit of a break and just wrap my head around what has been and what’s to come.

Do you ever watch old episodes of yourself?
Every once in a while, I do. We’re constantly on SoapNet, which I find both hilarious and great because I can turn on the TV and see the whole cast six years ago and how much we’ve all changed.

And do you always remember the episodes when you watch them on TV?
That’s the weirdest thing. I turn on the TV and watch specific scenes and I have no recollection of ever being there! It would be as if somebody filmed every single day of your high school career, you’d be like, I don’t remember saying that! I don’t remember doing that, but I guess I did, because it’s on TV!

So what do you have planned next?
I’ll start auditioning for roles, which is crazy. I haven’t really done a full audition for a long time, so I’m going to have to get back in the groove of going into that room and just doing my thing. But I also wrote a film that I want to direct.

What’s it about?
I guess you could classify it as a post-apocalyptic zombie western. It’s out there, but it’s grounded in real relationships. I’ve had the script written for two or three years now. I love zombies.

What are some of your favorite movies?
Wayne’s World is my all time favorite comedy. I used to watch it on VHS on repeat with my brother when I was ten years old. I also love the Harry Potter films–they’re genius! I watched all of them last Thanksgiving break–I couldn’t believe what I was missing.

What’s your fantasy outfit for a girl?
Well, I’m giving an interview to Glamour, so I know I might get crucified for this, but there’s a trend going on where girls are wearing clothes that are big, formless and flowing. There’s no element of mystery! I know it’s comfortable, but girls are just kind of hiding everything.

So you want to see some skin.
I understand why a lot of women want to dress hipster. But I grew up sneaking my mom’s Victoria’s Secrets…so I could look at the hot chicks!

One Tree Hill’s James Lafferty: Nathan actually needs Dan in his life this season

Will One Tree Hill’s Dan Scott gain forgiveness in this final season?

As the resident villain, Dan (Paul Johansson) has long been shunned by his son Nathan (James Lafferty) and his family, but on the Season 9 premiere a much more broken-down Dan returned to town in hopes of convincing Nathan and his wife Haley to help him to get back on his feet.

“In the past, Dan’s presence has brought a lot of turmoil and conflict, but this year, the way he colors Nathan’s life is much, much different,” Lafferty tells TVGuide.com. “Nathan’s actually going to need Dan a bit more this year.”

But can Dan ever redeem himself for killing his brother Keith, among other things? Lafferty says, “That remains to be seen. That’s largely at the heart of Nathan’s storyline this season and that’s one of the things we have to see him come to terms with — whether or not he can forgive Dan towards the end.”

It only seems fitting that the series, which began by highlighting Nathan and Dan’s intense relationship, comes full circle with the storyline — although it seems one of them might not make it out alive. When asked about that body Haley identifies in the season premiere, Lafferty says, “It definitely has something to do with Nathan’s storyline, but I can’t tell you how much.”

In addition to wrapping up a nine-seasons-long saga, Lafferty says the show will subtly nod to earlier times. “There’s a prevalent feeling of nostalgia in our last couple of episodes. We allude back to the original structure of the show and we hint at the beginning when it was about the Ravens basketball team and when it was about Tree Hill high,” Lafferty says. “We don’t focus too hard on it, it’s not as if we go back and play those roles again, but we definitely harken back to a time when things were simpler for our characters and their formative years.”

Lafferty, who’s one of the few original cast members remaining, says that although fans will be “thrown for a loop,” they’ll ultimately be satisfied by the way Nathan Scott signs off. “Tying this relationship up between Nathan and Dan is something that was really needed for Nathan’s storyline, Dan’s storyline and probably the show as a whole. This season, Dan’s back in a huge way and there’s very close attention paid to that relationship between father and son that either needs a total break off or mending.”
